TODAY, JUST DO TODAY

Have you been anxious, fearful, or worrying? Allow this devotional to remind you to let go! xo

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” -Philippians 4:6

This morning I did my quiet time, prayed, praised God, and got ready to dominate my day. Five minutes later, I was thinking about infertility. What if this cycle fails, how long, how hard, how much will we spend, where we will go, until we decide to adopt. Frankly, I want to have babies whether that’s through my womb or through adoption.

Now the thoughts at this time were just thoughts, I wasn’t feeling emotional or anxious, it was just thoughts of curiosity and doubt lingering into my mind (which was slightly ironic because holding my thoughts captive is exactly what I have been praying about lately.)  I wasn’t feeling emotional about them YET, but you can bet if I thought about them too long, I would have got emotional. Because as He thinks in His heart, so He is. (Proverbs 23:7)

As I was processing these thoughts, I heard God yell, “STOP. TODAY, JUST DO TODAY.” And this scripture came to mind. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Now when I say yell I don’t mean God audibly yelled and condemned me like I was in trouble. My God is a God of grace. It was more of a gentle love correction, whispered in my heart. But I heard it LOUD and clear.

How often do I fill up on Jesus and then seconds later am distracted by human thoughts?

I believe just like me, God is telling you to just do today! Stop thinking about tomorrow. Stop thinking about the things you have no control over. When doubt, fear, what if’s come up, we need to stop and hold those thoughts captive. I am not saying you ignore, or walk in denial. When feelings come up we need to take them head on so we can process grief healthy. But we need to stop worrying about the future.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.-“ Matthew 6:34

You don’t have to figure this out today. You don’t have to control the situation to get your miracle. All you have to do is do today. One day at a time, because today is the only day you are promised.

God is saying, “Stop. Stop thinking about what is next. Stop focusing on your circumstances and focus on me. I have you. I am a provider. I already have a plan figured out. You are already redeemed. You are already healed. Daughter, guard those thoughts. Set boundaries today so you are not focusing on tomorrow. Focus on me. Pray to me when fears rise. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, pray. I am listening. Come to me with thanksgiving because I have it figured out. Cast your request on me. I am here. Don’t worry about tomorrow or next cycle, or what if. Trust that I know what is best for you. Trust that I am a miracle worker. Take your focus off tomorrow and focus on today. I have given you so much today. I have a full day for you. Connect with me in the moment. I am here, waiting.”

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.

  1. Thank you! The are simple words, but there is a deep appreciation behind it. I read this post yesterday when I was having a serious anxiety moment and couldn’t shake it. I found a link to you through Pintrest. Anyway, every single words helped! Helped SO very much. I could feel satan and his minions, who hide behind anxiety, leave me. Because of your positive words that I read, through my tears, I felt the light and love of Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ around me and lift me. I wrote your words “Stop. Today. Just do today.” on pieces of paper and put them up in places I could see them so I could be reminded. It’s been 24 hours and it has helped so much. There is so much I would like to say, but I just really want you to know how thankful I am for you and your words and wisdom. Much love!
